Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 73
Reading 1 IS 58:7-10

Thus says the LORD:
Share your bread with the hungry,
shelter the oppressed and the homeless;

clothe the naked when you see them,
and do not turn your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your wound shall quickly be healed;
your vindication shall go before you,
and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,
you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
If you remove from your midst
oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;
if you bestow your bread on the hungry
and satisfy the afflicted;
then light shall rise for you in the darkness,
and the gloom shall become for you like midday.

Reading 2 1 COR 2:1-5

When I came to you, brothers and sisters,
proclaiming the mystery of God,
I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you
except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation
were not with persuasive words of wisdom,
but with a demonstration of Spirit and power,
so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom
but on the power of God.

Gospel MT 5:13-16

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”

How Jesus begins his ministry on earth

After celebrating  the Christmas, with the new year, if we observe the developing story of Jesus and his ministry, we could find that how the Gospel passage is being moved towards the accomplishment of the salvation story which God began before years.

1. The First Step of Jesus  – choosing the twelves

Immediately of  his public ministry, Jesus has chosen twelve disciples with the purpose of continuing his mission in the future.

We find the names of the 12 apostles in Matthew 10:2-4, Mark 3:14-19, and Luke 6:13-16:

And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

The mind of Jesus could be understood clearly when he has chosen his disciples. He has chosen the innocent and humble men to be his disciples and to  continue his future ministers.

 2. Second step of Jesus – speaking about beatitudes

“Beatitude is a possession of all things held to be good,
from which nothing is absent that a good desire may want.
Perhaps the meaning of beatitude may become clearer to us
if it is compared with its opposite.
Now the opposite of beatitude is misery.
Misery means being afflicted unwillingly with painful sufferings.”

According to the Gospel of Mathew, the second important move of Jesus after choosing his disciples was  to show how happy are the people who live for God.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Jesus wanted to show to his disciples that how blessed are they for they wanted to be the disciples of God.

3. The third step of Jesus – making the 12 disciples to realize that they were the salt and light of the world.

In today’s Gospel passage we find that Jesus is speaking about  salt and light. When we refer this passage today we feel that this message is to all who want to follow Christ.

If we carefully read the passage of Jesus about the salt and light, the message is not for all but to his 12 disciples first. If we imagine the picture of Jesus  with his disciples when he said this teaching to them, we could see that Jesus  was directly telling to his 12 disciples that they were the salt and light of the world even after his death and resurrection.

Now we think that this message to all who want to follow Christ. But when Jesus said this message in his time it was particularly  to the 12 disciples of him.

4. Meaning of salt

Salt in the bible has a deeper meaning. In the Old Testament and in the New testament there are many bible verses to show how important to be like salt in our life.

Salt is part and parcel in the ordinary life style. Without salt one cannot eat meal or we may not have the real taste of something which is eatable.

Disciples of Jesus suppose to give taste to the others in the world. For that they need to keep salt in their hearts.

Matthew 5:13 – Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Numbers 18:19 – All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it [is] a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.

Luke 14:34-35 – Salt [is] good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

Ezekiel 43:24 – And thou shalt offer them before the LORD, and the priests shall cast salt upon them, and they shall offer them up [for] a burnt offering unto the LORD.

Joshua 3:16 – That the waters which came down from above stood [and] rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that [is] beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, [even] the salt sea, failed, [and] were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

Inspirational story on salt

Once an unhappy young man came to an old master and told he had a very sad life and asked for a solution.
The old Master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it.
“How does it taste?” – the Master asked.
“Terrible.” – spat the apprentice.
The Master chuckled and then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the apprentice swirled his handful of salt into the lake.
The old man said, “Now drink from the lake.”
As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the Master asked, “How does it taste?”
“Good!” – remarked the apprentice.
“Do you taste the salt?” – asked the Master.
“No.” – said the young man.
The Master sat beside this troubled young man, took his hands, and said, “The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount we taste the ‘pain’ depends on the container we put it into. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things. Stop being a glass. Become a lake.”
